The first step for a newly license agent is to go find a broker in which to work. Students ask me all the time, what should I look for and do I have any recommendations?
What I tell students is to go out and interview as many brokers as you can for this is the best time to learn about the business. Brokers and/or managers usually are very willing to tell you, the newly license agent, about their firm and what they do to succeed in the business. Remember you can only work for one broker, so the other brokers are basically going to be your competition. What a great time to see what you competition does.
How do you decide on which broker? The main thing I tell students is that what you learned in the pre-license course is not going to make you successful, that you will need direction, training and someone to show you the ropes. So whatever brokerage firm you decide on, you need to feel comfortable with that person that you are going to be working with. You want it to be someone who, at 9 PM on a Sunday night, is willing to help you through issues as you are writing up an agreement to purchase with some buyers. That person has got to be someone that is interested in your success and will go out of their way to assist you.
The office environment needs to be professional and your fellow agents need to be friendly and have an office attitude of working together as a team.
If you are new, you want to find a brokerage company that is going to have some formal training. It can be as simple as you and the broker spending a designated time each week going over various aspects of the business. Getting the confidence and knowledge to work with potential clients and customers is essential in regards to finding success for a newly licensed agent.
